The Groom Tourist's Area 51 Trip April 28th, 1999

I was on a business trip to Reno, and had to be in San Francisco the next
day. I had almost no notice that I would be able to go to Lincoln county and
I only got unlimited miles on my car (praise Avis!) at the last possible
moment.
I can honestly say that although my goal was to take pictures of the gate of
the base, in doing that I was far more impressed with the scenery and the
people I met along the way on my VERY short trip.
The trip starts in Reno, Nevada.
Reno has an artifical, carnival air to it. When the classifieds take up less
than a single page, and most of them are casino jobs, it tells a lot about
the area. These aren't indian casinos, either. They are run by private folks
under state guidelines. Where these folks have strict limitations as to
where they can make people gamble, the indians don't.
I found the city pretty depressing. It seemed that in the middle of a
beautiful valley someone started dumping trash. As they dumped more trash
the pile got bigger in the middle and sprawled out in all directions.
Looking out over this city from any adjoining crest you could just imagine
someone realizing their mistake and tidying up with a foxtail & dustpan, and
the scene would finally look "normal".
you are person number 1421 who was as bored as me.
